Healthy Choices When Eating Out
Don’t think that because you’re on a diet you can’t ever eat out at restaurants and cafes etc. Follow the steps bellow to make healthy choices when eating out.
Check the nutritional info on the restaurant’s website
Look at the menu and nutritional information on the restaurant’s website. Most restaurants particularly if they’re part of a chain will list nutritional info on their website. Looking at this allows you to plan ahead and choose healthier lower calorie options.
Ask for changes
Don’t be afraid to ask for changes to the dish. For example if a dish is fried ask for it to be grilled, if it comes with fries ask for vegetables or salad instead. Salads often come with cheese and sauces so ask for it without these or for the dressing/ sauce to be on the side.
Ask for smaller portions
Another way to make healthy choices when eating out is asking for smaller portions. Portions can sometimes be pretty large in restaurants, and we all struggle with willpower sometimes and it can be easy to overeat. So make sure to ask for smaller portions to ensure you don’t overeat.
Allow for extra calories in your food diary
If you know you’re going to be eating out set aside calories in your food diary to allow for eating out, eat less during the day and save some calories for your restaurant meal. This effectively creates a calorie buffer.
Look for clues to healthier foods on the menu.
Look at the wording of dishes on the menu, this could give you a clue as to whether a dish is healthier. For example grilled meat instead of fried.
Words to look out for: Baked, grilled, boiled. Poached, roasted or steamed etc.
