How To Increase Your Step Count & Why It’s important.

The figure of 10,000 steps gets thrown around a lot but why is it important to increase your step count?  This blog will cover not just why it’s important to get more steps but also how to increase your step count with some very simple strategies

Let’s start with why

Walking is often overlooked as a form of exercise. Walking briskly can help you to increase your stamina, burn calories and improve your heart health.

Walking more is a great way to increase what is called NEAT. NEAT stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis. This is the energy you expend for everything you do that is not sleeping, eating or sports.  It includes energy burned from things like walking, gardening and even fidgeting etc.

NEAT helps to increase your metabolic rate and due to the increased metabolic rate you burn more calories.

So essentially if you are more active and do more steps on a daily basis you will burn more calories and therefore lose more weight/ body fat. Read more about the health benefits of walking here

So there’s the why let’s move onto how to increase your step count

I work with a lot of office workers and busy business owners who are sat down for most of the day, one of the things I suggest to them is to stand up where possible. So instead of doing phone calls sat down to stand up.

By standing up and moving away from your desk naturally you will get more steps in. Every time I do client calls or sales calls I stand up.

Another tip is to take the stairs more, instead of using a lift or escalator use the stairs.

Park further away, don’t use the closest parking space to where you need to go. By parking slightly further away you will get a few extra steps in.

Leave the car at home for travelling short distances, if it’s only a short walk to get somewhere avoid driving and instead walk there, not only do you get fresh air but you also increase your step count.

Getting more steps is often one of the first changes I encourage people to do alongside working out at the gym or at home. It’s simple but very effective.
